Sharon and Israeli Politics
Israel and Palestine
Two leaders dominate this discussion -- Yasser Arafat and Ariel Sharon -- even while the US and Israel try to promote Abu mazen. There is little need to document the shortcomings of Yasser Arafat -- they are covered every day in the American press. ... But what about the other partner in the peace? What kind of man is Ariel Sharon? What's his history? What's the mentality and political picture in Israel under his leadership?

Appel to be indicted for bribing Sharon and his deputy Olmert: might yet be indicted, as might Gilad Sharon
Haaretz - Israel News: "Appel to be indicted; Greek island charges name Sharon, Olmert | By Baruch Kra, Haaretz Correspondent | January 21, 2004

Prosecutors will Wednesday indict businessman David Appel in Tel Aviv District Court for bribing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and, apparently, his deputy, Minister Ehud Olmert.
...
... The amended charge sheet implies the subjects of the bribes - Sharon and Olmert - were active participants in the bribery deals. The charge sheet names other public officials, whose names have so far been kept out of news coverage of the affair.
...
The charge sheet is also expected to contain surprises involving other public officials who were involved with Appel and is based on a vast accumulation of evidence, documents, testimony to the police, audio and videotapes, and wiretaps of phone calls between Appel and suspects in the case, including Sharon and Olmert.

The indictment leaves open the possibility that the recipients of the bribes might yet be indicted, as might Gilad Sharon as a suspect in the mediation of a bribe.

Excite News: "More Than 100,000 Protest Sharon Plan | Jan 11, 7:10 PM (ET) | By LAURIE COPANS

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) - More than 100,000 settlers and their backers on Sunday protested the Israeli prime minister's plans to evacuate Jewish settlements as part of a peace agreement or a unilateral withdrawal from Palestinian areas.
...
Tel Aviv police chief Yossi Sedbon said police estimates put the crowd at 120,000 people.
...
"Uprooting settlements rips apart the nation," read one sign. "Sharon - resign, we don't want you any more," said another.

"We won't dismantle settlements and we won't expel Jews," [Housing Minister] Eitam said to the cheers of the crowd. "We will not be a party to dismantling settlements."

The settlers and their supporters believe they have a God-given right to live wherever they want within the biblical land of Israel, which includes the West Bank. Palestinians say the settlements are an encroachment on land they claim for a future state.

"All of Zionism is based on the belief that we have a right to this land," Likud lawmaker and parliamentary speaker Reuven Rivlin told AP.

Israeli MP Advocates Ethnic Cleansing

Israeli MP Uzi Cohen says that many in Isreal support “the idea of ethnic cleansing." He adds, "Many people support the idea but few are willing to speak about it publicly." Palestinians would have to "leave voluntarily" in 20 years.

Cohen, a right wing member of Ariel Sharon's Likud Party, believes a Palestinian State should be established in Northern Jordan with the backing of the US, EU and wealthy oil-rich Arab nations. This is where Palestinians could flee.

Cohen says: “In case they don’t leave, plans would have to be drawn up to expel them by force.” Arab leaders in Israel's Knesset have denounced this as "Jewish fascism." Aljazeera says some fear an "encroaching Palestinian demographic threat."
